R-454B (Honeywell Solstice 454B) is the refrigerant most American OEMs selected for their 2025+ residential split system and heat pump lineup. It's not a drop-in for R-410A - and the differences matter for every tech entering A2L territory for the first time.

Why R-454B is not a drop-in

R-454B's A2L classification drives the difference. Equipment for A2L refrigerants is purpose-designed with leak detection, proper charge sizing, ventilation interlocks, and components rated for the flammability class. Putting R-454B into an R-410A unit is a code violation in most jurisdictions and voids every OEM warranty in existence.

What this means for service tooling

• →Recovery machines must be A2L-rated and clearly labeled

• →Leak detectors must be compatible with A2L refrigerants

A2L training

EPA doesn't require a new certification, but your distributor, OEM, and many state codes now require documented supplemental A2L safety training (typically 40–50 hours). Topics include flammability limits, burning velocity, ignition sources in service, leak response, charge-size calculations, and UL 60335-2-40 / ASHRAE 15 compliance.
